Shaunna Oteka McCovey, Yurok/Karuk poet

Shaunna Oteka McCovey (Yurok/Karuk) wrote her first poem at the age of six, while growing up on the Yurok Indian reservation in Northern California. She is a graduate of Humboldt State University and holds a Master's Degree in social work from Arizona State. She has also earned both a Master's Degree in environmental law and a Juris Doctorate from Vermont Law School. Her poems have appeared in News from Native California, Through the Eye of the Deer, and The Dirt is Red Here.

She is currently teaching at Humboldt State University in the Dept. of Social Work. With a background in law, she is very interested in exploring the intersections of social work and the law. As a member of the Yurok Tribe of Northern California, she particularly enjoys working with diverse populations and remains committed to strengthening Native American communities.

She is the author of a chapbook, Swim You Every River, and her first full-length book of poetry, The Smokehouse Boys, is available from Heyday Books.
