The South American Indian Information Center (SAIIC) was founded in 1983 with the goal to provide information on and international support for the Indigenous rights movement in South America. Nilo Cayuqueo was appointed to coordinate this center and its activities in California. SAIIC supported Indian self-determination and the unification of the Indigenous rights movement on a continental level. It did this through a series of projects and programs, including the publication of a quarterly journal, production of a radio program, an Indian visitor and cultural exchange program, human rights and urgent action alerts, and public presentations.

In 1986, SAIIC changed its name to the "South and Central American Indian Information Center" in order to more explicitly include Mexico. In 1994, the name was once again changed, this time to the "South and Meso American Indian Rights Center." It has, however, always retained the acronym "SAIIC."

In 1990, SAIIC helped organize the First Continental Conference on Five Hundred Years of Indigenous Resistance in Quito, Ecuador together with CONAIE and ONIC.
