Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United states of America. It was one of the original 13 colonies, and was originally founded by Roger Williams,a baptist minister exiled from Plymouth colony. He settled in present day Providence, nearby the river. There are two Indian tribes historically in RI. On the eastern shores of the state would be bands of the Wampanoag tribe. In the central coastal and highland areas area would have been the large Narragansett tribe. In nearby Connecticut, the Niantic and Pequot bordered the territory of the Narragansetts. Southern R.I. is home of the area Great Swamp area where a tremendous battle occured between the Wampanoag, Narragansetts and white settlers. The legendary Wampanoag warrior Metacom, or King Philip led the victorious that bloody day. Battles like these contribute to Metacom's general despise by the white settlers and many Native people. Many, including Dee Brown, author of Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, consider him as the first of many indigenous Americans to aggressively defy colonial, white rule. The Narragansett Tribe is federally recognized, as is the Wampanoag. On the western border in Stonington, CT, is the also federally recognized Mashantucket Pequot tribe and the smaller Connecticut recognized Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation.
