Hunkpapa

The Hunkpapa refers to a Native American group that makes up one of the seven branches or bands of the Lakota Sioux tribe. During the 1870s, the Hunkpapa when active in fighting the United States Government, largely led by Sitting Bull. The Hunkpapa were present during General George Armstrong Custer's defeat at The Battle of Little Bighorn or "Greasy Grass." The majority of Hunkpapa Lakota now reside on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation of South and North Dakota.

The word "Hunkpapa" is from the Lakota language meaning "Gatekeepers" or "Head of the Circle", due to the Hunkpapa tradition of setting up their lodges at the entryway to the circle of the Great Council when the Sioux met in convocation.
