Dan Namingha

Dan Namingha (born in 1950) is an important Native American painter and sculptor. He was born in Keams Canyon, Arizona and is a member of the Hopi-Tewa tribe. His mother is He currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he maintains a gallery for his work and that of his sons, Arlo & Michael. His mother is Dextra Nampeyo Quotskuyva; his great-great-grandmother was Nampeyo, the Hopi potter who restored the art of Hopi pottery-making.
A book discussing Namingha's art by Thomas Hoving, previously a director at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, is available.

Style
His work alludes to Hopi cosmology and symbology, affirming and extending his Hopi/Tewa identity while breaking with the traditional limits of Indian art through modern minimalism.
